Capturing a politician and his dogs in one shot.

Dog Gone, That Was Quick

Shea Taylor is a very determined and principled young man who has decided to enter the political arena in GA beginning with a run for the Georgia State House District 37 seat encompassing Marietta. If you do not know him presently, I am sure you will be familiar with him in the future. Shea is a very impressive individual. We chose to do the shoot in Glover Park. The iconic fountain is a landmark for Marietta, plus it was the week of July 4th and we could expect some nice patriotic decorations in the park.

Since most of the voters in the area have seen Shea walking his German Shepherds around the Marietta Square, he insisted that the dogs be in his hero shot But there was one small problem – Kyni, the female on the left is skittish and afraid of camera flash. So as soon as a flash goes off, she runs for cover – we only had 1chance, 1shot to get it right. (I love a good challenge)

I set up the strobe and tested it in advance. Once Shea and the dogs were on the set, we gave Savage and Kyni some scrumptious hospitality o’dourves – chicken doggy treats. Shea was ready, the dogs were looking for treats, and B A N G! we had our shot. Immediately, Kyni was straining at the leash to get away from the camera. Savage was ready for more as long as the treats kept coming.

No two photo shoots are the same, but to get great shots, the process is the same. It starts with pre-visualization, pre-planning including location, time, lighting, people, and props, and finally flawless execution.

It was great to work with Shea Taylor. I expect this is his beginning of a stellar career.

Art of the Family

First let me assure you that every photo I create starts out as a color photo.  When a client completes a session, they will see both color and black and white proofs of their family portraits.

But why Black and White?

By its nature, Black and White is an abstract medium. The absence of color creates a surrealism that invites the viewer to interpret rather than just view the subject. Elements of the photo like composition, subject matter, lighting, and mood, become more dramatic and more important in the absence of color.

In portraiture, I believe that the absence of color elevates the unseen aspects of a subject’s personality.  Black and white reduces the strong sensuality and attraction of the flesh elevating the soul and the spirit.  When my models look into the camera, I feel that by taking their photo, I am capturing not only their physical appearance, but their whole being – body, soul, and spirit.  This is what my portrait photography is all about. This is the “Art” of Art of the Family.
